If you want to know more about the Go Abroad Fund, please see answers to the most frequently asked questions below. What are the criteria used for selecting candidates? Applicants have to answer the following personal statement question in their application: "In 300 words or less, please describe your proposed activity and explain why it should be funded. What exactly do you plan to do, and how will your activity enhance your academic experience and future goals?" Within their personal statement, successful candidates will need to:Present a well-researched and coherent proposal for the international activity, explaining what they will be doing on their activity and why it is important to themDemonstrate strong motivation for undertaking an international experienceShow the extent to which they will benefit (academically and personally) from both the funding and the international experience Can I apply for the Go Abroad Fund if I received it previously? You cannot apply for the Go Abroad Fund in 2025 if you were a recipient of the Go Abroad Fund in 2020 - 2024. If you were a recipient in a year previous to 2020, you are still eligible to apply in 2025. This is due to the Go Abroad Fund budget being cut in half so we need to ensure the University can support the largest number of students to undertake an international educational activity as possible. When will I hear whether I have been successful? Both successful and unsuccessful applicants will be emailed on or before 1 May 2025 with their outcome. Can I submit more than one application? No, you can only submit one application to the Go Abroad Fund each year. If I’m not successful, can I apply to any future Go Abroad funding opportunities? Of course! I didn’t hear about the Fund in time to apply. Do you accept late applications? Unfortunately, we receive a high volume of applications, and cannot consider late applications. In previous years, I received Go Abroad Funding via the Turing Scheme. Is the Turing funding still available for short-term summer activities? Unfortunately, the Turing Scheme funding is not available for Go Abroad Fund activities in 2025. My destination has been designated ‘Red: Advise against all travel’ by the UK Government since I put in my application. What does this mean? The University cannot allow students to go to countries that have been categorised as such as it may be dangerous. Please be aware that funding may not be given on the basis of your destination’s categorisation by the UK Government in an effort to keep all students safe. For information about your destination, please check the foreign travel advice. How do I formally accept the funding I have been awarded? You will need to log into your Mobility-ONLINE workflow to accept your offer. You will receive details about how to do this in your offer email. What conditions do I need to conform to before funding is transferred to me? You must complete your activity details form and risk assessment, as well as input your bank details via your Mobility-ONLINE workflow. You will not receive funding until all of these steps are complete. Depending on your activity dates and your prompt action in completing the above steps, there is a strong possibility that you will not receive your funding until after you leave for your activity. Where can I find a summer activity? Go Abroad Fund activities are summer activities that are self-sourced by applicants. However, a good place to start would be the External Opportunities page, which features international opportunities offered from partner institutions and other organisations.
